Climate

The Northland offers its residents the chance to enjoy the outdoors all four seasons every year. In summer, we hike and bike our trails and play in our lakes. We drive along the shores of Lake Superior in autumn and marvel at our fall colors. In winter, we ski and play hockey and revel in snow-covered forests. And in spring, the whole region comes alive for another season of outdoor festivals and recreation. With so many activities available no matter the season, locals and visitors alike have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors year round.

Minnesota gets an average of 28 inches of rain each year, while the nation averages 37. The state averages 44 inches of snow compared a national average of 25. In the Northland, we embrace the cold and snow, and know how to have fun no matter the temperature.

The table includes average high temperatures (measured in July) and low temperatures (measured in January). The comfort index measures the comfort of a climate, with higher values for more appealing conditions. It uses a combination of afternoon summer temperatures and humidities to closely predict the effect that humidty will have on people. Elevation is measured in feet.

This table lists 20 of the largest communities in the region. For information on smaller towns, contact Karl Schuettler at 218-529-7564 or kschuettler@northspan.org.
