Healthcare and Wellness

Since 1990, Minnesota has ranked among the top six states in analyses of the health of its citizens. The Northland's success here is no surprise, as it features a robust healthcare network, clean lakes and streams, and clear northern air. Abundant recreation options and make it easy to stay in shape.

The air quality index is based on annual reporting to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It measures the number of ozone alert days along with amounts of seven pollutants including particulates, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, lead and volatile organic chemicals. The higher the value, the better.

Water quality is again rated by the EPA. They measure the watershed quality, using 15 indicators such as pollutants, turbidity, sediments, and toxic discharges.

The number and impact of Superfund sites is measured within the county, and including spending on cleanup efforts.

The number of physicians per capita measures the number of physicians per 100,000 residents in an area.

The health care costs are a comparsion with the national mean of 100.
